Transmitting too much data via shared folders or network causes guest services to die followed by system instability

Description
If I copy more than a few hundred MB in a short period of time to the host via shared folders, or the network, then the guest services stop working (no more clipboard integration, mouse stops moving, auto adjustment of window size stops).
Usually this is followed by a guru meditation when the guest is restarted.
Host is Windows Vista Home Basic SP2, guest is Linux 2.6.30.
