Description
Howdy,
The `Version' of this bug is against 3.1.0 Beta 3 r55271 - the tracker doesn't have this version in its pull-down.
While there's a positive improvement when accessing Office files via a shared folder, there's a negative impact on non-Office files. I use Sybase's PowerDesigner (PD). The files are accessible via a shared folder. With 3.0.12 and before, there wasn't much of a delay when opening the files. Unfortunately, I don't have timings however I can downgrade to 3.0.12 if necessary and collect metrics.
With Beta 3, the folder icon doesn't show any activity for 16 seconds after double-clicking on the PD file. Once activity starts, there is a flutter before the icon goes solid with activity. This second step takes an additional four seconds. Adding all the fractions, it takes roughly 21 seconds to open the file.
What's strange is accessing a large-ish text file is nearly instantaneous.
I checked lmhosts' and
hosts' and cleaned up previous hacks to `vboxsrv' - e.g. aliasing it to 127.0.0.1
Please let me know what additional metrics are necessary.
Cheers, -pablo

Ah, thanks for the heads up on reporting to the forum. I'll do so.
As for the lmhosts entries, as I mentioned in the description, I removed the hack thinking the new fix was in conflict with it. Unfortunately, it didn't make a difference one way or another.

I thought I'd follow-up with what I found.
I have two machines which are essentially mirrors of one another. One is a desktop and the other is a laptop (for travel). I found the laptop's VM had no trouble starting PD. Given the VM is XP, I took the path of least resistance and copied the laptop's VDI to mj desktop. PD starts super fast.
I'll attribute the issue to a Microsoft type of conflict. Who knows! :) It's not important to me ... as long as it works.
Beta issues should be reported on forum: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=15
BTW, have you added lmhosts entries as mentioned in http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/1728 ?
