Guests crashing when using ISCSI backed SATA disks
Reported by: | Chris Brown | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | virtual disk | Version: | VirtualBox 3.1.0 |
Keywords: | iscsi sata | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Linux |
Description
When using an iscsi target/lun as a backing to a "SATA" disk in VBox the guest crashes upon any attempt to boot the guests respective kernel. This occurs during either boot or install time and does not matter if the SATA disk is being used as the boot disk or as a secondary disk.
The primary tested VBox host OS is openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 (OS details in attached files). Additionally I tested with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 as the VBox host OS on the exact same HW config with the same results the guests still crash.
Basic HW details: 2x Intel Xeon W5580 SMT ON, 12GB DDR3 Mem @ 1333MHz, QPI @ 6.4 GT/s, LSI SAS (MPT-IR - IS/RAID 0) 4x 15K 146GB local disks
The ISCSI target did not matter. I tested using OpenSolaris (Updated to SNV128a) with comstar, and openSUSE 11.1/11.2 using IET, same end result guests still crash regardless of what target is used.

This bug seems to have been resolved with the latest 3.1.2 version. The fix for "SATA: fixed raw vmdk disks (bug #5724)" may have been related to this issue as well.
