VirtualBox cannot load split VHD files.

When I try to open a split VHD file in the VirtualBox Media Manager, I get the following error:
Failed to open the hard disk D:\Fedora 7 Hard Disk.vhd. Could not get the storage format of the medium 'D:\Fedora 7 Hard Disk.vhd' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).
The VHD file is split because Microsoft Virtual PC automatically splits VHD files on disks that have the FAT32 filesystem.
