OpenStep 4.2 guest floppy issue

I install an OpenStep 4.2 guest in all versions of VirtualBox from 1.6.0 to 3.1.2 running on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 host successfully. However, whenever I log into OpenStep 4.2 with the (virtual) floppy drive empty, OpenStep reports "the inserted disk is unreadable. Eject/initialize?".
This happens in all versions of VirtualBox/Mac OS X from 1.6.0 to 3.1.2, but does not happen either in VMware, Parallels, or on real hardware.
