Muting sound on virtualized pc disables soundcard in host pc

Host: Ubuntu 10.04 Guest: Win XP
In XP I clicked in the system tray to mute the sound.
Next time I started up the host system, no sound card is even detected.
Starting virtual box and un-muting in the guest system cured the problem.
