This is affecting me currently. I have Windows 7 host, Ubuntu 12.04 guest. In a terminal window, after pressing Control-V to print keypresses, then pressing Control+Home, only the Home key registers. This means I can't bind Control-Home to anything (e.g. in Emacs). I've checked the keyboard shortcuts under System Settings in Ubuntu, but nothing is set for Control-Home. In the Windows host, Control-Home works.

Again, this sounds to me like you use the right Ctrl key as host key. The host key is not passed to the guest, regardless if there is a host key combination or not. Either use the left host key or choose a different host key (or even a host key combination, e.g. Left+Right Ctrl key).
Using which host and guest OSes?
It works fine for me (host&guest XP, with and without guest additions)
By default, the right CTRL is the Host Key. Use the left Ctrl+Home or change the host key in VirtualBox settings.
