We believe that we fixed this bug in SVN. The fix will be included in the next version of VBox (either 1.5.6 or 1.6).

Same issue gutsy 32 bit host with xp sp2 guest tried to copy 50+ gigs of pictures said it would take 8 hours copying from host to guest via shared folder would crash guest randomly sometimes after 40 gigs sometimes after 1 but never worked.
