Windows XP x64 Guest Crashes at "Setup is starting Windows"
Reported by: | mikew1214 | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | VMM/HWACCM | Version: | VirtualBox 3.2.8 |
Keywords: | nested paging x86_64 windows linux | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Host: Debian 5.0 "Lenny" x86
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
(note: highmem 64GB was enabled to allow 32-bit debian to address all 8GB of RAM - because trying to make 64-bit linux work 100% is a complete pain in the a)
Guest: Windows XP Pro. x64
The setup process dies immediately after the setup reads "Setup is starting Windows."
Though I know nothing of 32- vs. 64-bit in this regard, disabling "Nested Paging" made the problem go away completely. Just wanted to send it what I can.

No, that's a limit (which will disappear soon) that's clearly documented in the manual.

Thanks for the report. I've fixed the problem. In the mean time you can work around it by either disabling nested paging or lowering the amount of guest ram to 1900 MB or so.
By the way: you should really update to 64-bit Linux :)

Actually, now that I'm looking at it...gnome-system-monitor reports 8GB of RAM but
Settings->System->Motherboard->Base Memory only allows a guest to use up to 2560MB.
Make this its own bug, too?
