My webcam has a really slow performance under the virtualbox, maybe 2 - 3 screens per one minute. I don't have such problems with "clear" Windows.
I'm using:
Ubuntu 7.10 as host OS Windows XP SP2 as guest Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000

Is this possibly related to #242? That one deals with a black image from a webcam.
This case, the 'blue' screen may in fact be the overlay.

Try webcam passthrough from recent VBox versions (4.3.30 or 5.0.0).

I have a similar problem with Ubuntu 8.04 host with an XP Guest and Quick Cam Pro 5000. The camera is detected properly and recognized by the Logitech software but no images are displayed. Only a blue screen appears where the video should be displayed. I tried waiting but no frames at all would appear. I also tried capturing single images and this didn't work.
I noticed a thread on ubuntu forums describing the same exact issue. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=552774
