#8564 new enhancement
WiFi network adapter
Reported by: | dum | Owned by: | |

Component: | network | Version: | VirtualBox 4.0.4 |

Description
Currently there are only wired network adapters available. A wireless adapter should be available too.
Some WiFi networks need a certificate to gain access. This certificate may (sometimes) only be installed IF a WiFi network is present and active on the (guest) server.
To allow for the VM guest to gain full access to a certificate controlled WiFi network, even thou the VM host does not, the VM guests need a network adapter of type WiFi.

"usual workflow" (whoever determined that) may be to have the host connect over WiFi. But this gives the host AND all guest VM network access through the WiFi network. In some cases this is (very) undesirable, like when only the VM is registered in the domain, and the certificate is based on the machine name and HW available in the VM only. The conclusion the "only host needs certificate" seems a little hasty.

I use VirtualBox mainly for testing purpose and it's a pain not to be able to test things around wifi networking.

Hi! Have you made any progress on this one? I was trying to test pfsense router in virtual box before buying actual hardware for it. And I needed to bridge my WiFi card in order to create an AP. But having only wired adapters to choose from in network settings can't do this, can't assign a wired adapter as a wifi in pfsense. Would be nice to have that, don't see why it's not implemented yet.
The usual workflow is to have host connect over WiFi and guest connect via host in this case. Only host needs certificate.
