Virtualbox 4.0.4 PXE boot not working
Reported by: | cbecker | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | network | Version: | VirtualBox 4.0.4 |
Keywords: | PXE boot | Cc: | f0877e61f2f879f5a1244afbbc63a01c@… |
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Host System is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS , Kernle 2.6.32-30-generic, architecture is x86_64, virtualbox version is 4.0.4-70112~Ubuntu~lucid.
When trying to do a network boot (PXE) I just get an: "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted."
Depending on which Network Card I choose I somtimes get some additional information, looks like dhcp works but tftp does not (s attachment). In some cases I get "PXE-E73: Invalid DHCP option format."
If i downgrade from 4.0.4 to 3.2.12 PXE just works fine.

You were right, I missed to install "VirtualBox 4.0.4 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" I now downloaded and ran "virtualbox Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.0.4-70112.vbox-extpack".
Now I am able to do PXE boot using "Intel PRO/1000 MT DEsktop 82540EM" network card.
So this issue is resolved. Sorry for stealing your time.
The debian/ubuntu virtualbox packages just should contain the extention pack if you ask me, makes no sense to offer a boot from network if it wont work.

The reason for the PXE boot issue is that there are licensing issues with the Intel PXE code so we are not allowed to make our source code public. So for open source there remains only the old etherboot code which does not work for E1000. We plan to switch to iPXE but did not find time to do so yet.
