FreeBSD installation crashed, then unable to shut down or screenshot VM: VERR_VM_INVALID_VM_STATE

Description
FreeBSD 8.2 crashed during installation on VirtualBox 4.0.8 without Extension Pack. Screen shot attached. Kernel did not manage to complete a backtrace.
After that, I was unable to shut down or reset the virtual machine. I get the following error message:
Failed to pause the execution of the virtual machine FreeBSD.
Could not suspend the machine execution (VERR_VM_INVALID_VM_STATE).
