USB support broken in 4.1.0
Reported by: | USBProb | Owned by:

Component: | USB | Version: | VirtualBox 4.1.0 |
Keywords: | USB broken empty filter reboot host | Cc:
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Windows |
Description (last modified by )
Tried to get my Ralink Wireless-Card in VBox 4.1.0. Therefore I created before the start of the VM a filter for that device. Then I try to get it into the VM. VBox always says device is busy and even shows that device when it is unpluged. Pluggin and unpluggin the device while the VM is running has no effect. If I create an empty filter and then plug the device while the VM is running whole USB of the Host is broken. I can't use my mouse anymore. I connected via RDP to the HOST and shutdown all VirtualBox processes. Then I pluged and unplugged my mouse --> no success. I had to reboot the whole VM. I now reverted to VBox 4.0.8 and everything works fine regarding USB. (Forgot to mention that I always installed the proper extension Pack for USB support).
I see this as a critical bug because Host has to be rebooted after occurence.
Technical Data: Host Win 7 64 Bit 8 GB RAM Core i5 2500K, HardwareVirtualization support enabled

Problem reoccured. An empty filter captured my mouse when I plugged an USB device. Version was 4.1.2 With the build misha provided everything works fine. So it is not really solved in 4.1.2.
I reopened it that you know that the changes misha made are included in the next release. You can then close it.

What exactly the problem with the 4.1.2 is? An empty filter should capture all devices on your host. Isn't that the case?

An empty filter should only filter the devices that are plugged while the machine is running. Devices that were plugged bevor, should not be captured. With the testbuild it works correctly.

Unfortunately we are unable to reproduce the problem here. I can give you a link to the instrumented build that contains verbose logging for USB subsytem so you can collect the log and post it back to me for analysis so we can detect the problem.
If you are willing to test it, please drop me a mail at mikhail dot sennikovsky at oracle dot com I'll then post you a link to the test build with instructions on how to collect the log.
