FreeBSD-8.2-amd64 under Ubuntu 64bit 2.6.32-33-server host, portsnap extract crashes VM, does not crash VBox itself.

Description
The 'portsnap extract' operation causes the VM to panic, inevitably leading to an unavoidable reboot. I'm thinking that the disk i/o during this operation is causing the VM to panic.
