Description
Mac OS X 10.7.1 host. VirtualBox v 4.1.4. See Discussion:https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=45512&p=205827#p205827
Part A: 1.) With VirtualBox Manager frontmost 2.) Slide the Splitter all the way to the left 3.) Quit the program 4.) Open VB again 5.) Splitter handle is not available anymore
I had to edit the xml file at <ExtraDataItem name="GUI/SplitterSizes" value="0,661"/> to get back my list of VMs.
Part B: As above, but after step 2, instead of quitting the app, try to move the splitter handle back. The handle is only 1 pixel wide, very hard to grab.

Still reproducible in VirtualBox 6.0.14. 6.0.16 has performance problems in our environment so we had to revert to 6.0.14. One can unintentionally and in easy way shift right edge of virtual machine list to most left. If done so the VB Manager left pane is gone immediately (VB restart not necessary for reproduction) and it is practically impossible to undo using merely Manager GUI. One needs to go to certain host user profile VB xml (VirtualBox.xml in /Users/<username>/Library/VirtualBox) file and look there for possible value field.
VB reinstallation does not help to recover.
Tested on macOS 10.12.latest-greatest
Tested bug on Mac OS X 10.5.8, Leopard, using VirtualBox version 4.0.4. This bug is not present on that system/software combination.
