This 'bug' is three years old now and clearly has had no attention from the developers, it undoubtedly is an even older issue than the date this was logged.
There is a very widely held desire for Guest additions for OS X clients as will be obvious with even a cursory search of the various user forums.
Yes, one can use a network login from a guest to a host to 'share' a folder, yes one can to a very limited extent add additional video resolutions to a guest, however all of this and more is equally true for Linux and Windows guests and the developers have bothered to create guest additions for those operating systems so why not for OS X guests?
Personally while as stated above yes one can use a network share as a means to 'share' a folder this does not always provide the desired level of sharing or at a minimum requires considerable additional hardwork. For example, the only 'normal' way to auto mount a network share requires the OS X client be logged as a user, then the user login items take effect which can trigger the mounting of a network share. If one however is wanting to run a guest without a user being logged in, a common situation with OS X server which is only going to run server processes, then one would have to go to great effort to manually setup a network auto-mount. Furthermore using a network mount rather than a shared folder might both affect permissions, and the ability to re-share a folder. Again I point out that having guest additions which allow true shared folder access - with built-in auto mounting of the shared folder is considered good enough to be offered for Linux and Windows so why not for OS X?
Three years have now passed (or more) so there has been more than enough time to get round to this. The market share for OS X users has also considerably increased both in absolute numbers and percentage share during this time.
It is therefore high time this omission was addressed. Perhaps with the imminent milestone of moving to version 5.0 of Virtualbox this can be at long last included?
Note: Both VMware and Parallels offer OS X guest additions, yes they are commercial products but they clearly recognise the need for such a solution why not Oracle?

jelockwood, why do you think that the VBox developers don't recognize that OSX guest Additions are useful? Please read this page again, in particular the paragraph about demanding fixes. There are a number of items on our TODO list and it happens that items move from one milestone to another. The priority of a bug/feature request is not automatically increased with the age of the report.
Typo - last additions should be editions.
