#8581 closed defect (fixed)
64 bit guests hang on Solaris 11 64 bit host
Reported by: | Ron Halstead | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 4.0.4 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | other | Host type: | Solaris |
Description (last modified by )
Installation of any 64 bit guest host (any Linux, Solaris 10, etc) hangs with no error message during installation, at various points during the software copying phase. Existing 64 bit guests hang during boot with no error messages. Log files just stop at the hang point, no indication of reason for failure. 32 bit guests work. NOTE: 64 bit installation and booting working OK prior to VB4.x

Different problem with vbox 4.1.6 On Solaris 10 U10 host and Solaris 11 11/11 guest, I get "long mode not supported,RebootingPress any key to reboot" This happens with both the Solaris 11 11/11 live and text install dvds. At least the live installer works fine on Solaris 11 Express bare metal. I have included the log sol11vb10-2011-11-12-10-34-42.log

Please try with increase the VM's RAM size to 1536 MiB or more. Your current size of 1024 MiB is not enough for the latest Solaris versions.

1GB RAM is ok.
I have had the same problem on my box (Dell r610). I wasn't able to install _any_ 64bit guest system and if I tried to install 64bit Linux from 64bit iso only it hanged up on start after grub with error with wrong ELF architecture. The sollution was for me check BIOS (proccessor settings -> virtualization). It was Disabled (I don't know if it was by default or somebody somehow changed it).
May you try to boot 64bit kernel in guest system (ie. from iso image of live CD)? Have you tried to check the BIOS settings?

Why is this being closed. The last description, 'no response, closing' is not acceptable. The last contact with you was:

You need to do better than that.

I actually didn't close the ticket but I intended to because there was an additional comment by neysem which did not get any response. Replying to trac@ will not work, you have to add comments using the web interface.
So what's the current status for you if you use VBox 4.1.18, does it still hang?

Yes, it still hangs. I just tried it with VBox 4.1.18 and Oracle Lunux 6.3 64 bit. The process gets to the Installation Starting / Starting Installation Process, and the window freezes. The progress bar stops at the ti in starting. There is no mouse cursor control. The log gives no indication of a problem. I have attached the log.

Does the VirtualBox process hang and you need to kill it, or just the guest that hangs and sits there and you can power-off the VM properly? Also, how much RAM does your host system have?
